As summer draws to a close and we get our first taste of fall in the shortening days and first turning leaves, it is natural to think of drawing inward like the sap of the trees, to think of rest, reflection, and retreat. "Encountering the Multi-dimensional Merton," September 14-16
Thomas Merton's essays, poems, and letters span nearly every sphere of public, religious and spiritual life--social reform, theology, peacemaking, the creative arts, East-West dialogue. But, at root, Merton was a contemplative, spending as many hours in solitude as he could arrange. Whether one considers Merton a longtime inner companion or a complete stranger, this weekend is an invitation to find an entry point by which one can see life through the eyes of the twentieth century’s best-known monastic.
Leaders:Merrill Carrington, M. Div., is a spiritual director and retreat leader. Tim Carrington is Board chair of The Friends of St. Benedict, a non-profit offering access to Benedictine spirituality through retreats, study groups, and pilgrimages.
"Together In Christ," October 12-14
On the night before he died, gathered together with his closest associates and with only hours left to live, Jesus expressed a deep hope and desire for his present and future followers with the prayer: "Father, may they all be one, as you are in me and I am in you; may they be one in us so that the world may believe that you sent me" (Jn 17:21). Do we hold this prayer close to our hearts? Is there any sense of unrest or pain within us at our divisions? Or do we just take them for granted as "the way things are"? We will seek to draw close to the heart of Christ in prayer, contemplating his call to us and reflecting on why it matters to him and to the credibility of his message to the world.
Leader: Tom Ryan, CSP, directs the Paulist Fathers' North American Office for Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations in DC. He has authored 14 books in the area of spirituality and leads retreats throughout the U.S and Canada.
"Wind Trails In the Sea" October 26-28
“…wind trails in the sea” (from a poem by Antonio Machado) Each of us has a deep soul and an authentic soul path longing to be awakened and embodied in this world. In this retreat, we will explore images and metaphors from sacred story and engage in conversations and encounters with the sacred earth. In these ways, we seek to open—ever more fully—to the mystery and wisdom of who we truly are.
Leaders: Cheryl Hellner and Jim Hall live in a solar cottage they helped design and build as part of the Earth Ministry demonstration at Dayspring. Their life together includes teaching, writing, caring for the earth, and wilderness travel.
